The 3Ps of How to Get a Job

Getting your dream job requires definiteness of purpose backed by a holistic plans and actions on your part. If you have been following stories in the newspapers and statistics we are being fed with, you will agree with me that unemployment rate is hitting the roof worldwide.

As if that is not enough, there are a lot of people in the workforce who are either underemployed or dissatisfied with the conditions of their jobs. There are obvious reasons for this.

One, the world working population is growing by the day compared with the number of industries being established to cater for this teeming group needing jobs.

Second, technologies are making matters worse, so to speak. Jobs that would otherwise have taken ten (10) men to do two decades ago can now be performed by a single person using the latest technology and software specifically designed for such jobs. It is good news and bad news as well.

What are the result and the effect? Your guess is as good as mine. Either you are among the lucky few with the wherewithal or resources to assume the job responsibility now available or you are among the exodus of people without a job or barely doing fringe jobs to survive.

Now, the question you should be asking is: “How do I go around this and make things happen?” This report has been prepared to achieve that goal for you. By adopting the “The 3Ps of How to Get a Job”, you are definitely on your path to success. Stay tuned.

So, before you start to search for a job to work and keep, you must of necessity do the few things listed below in order to give your working life a meaning. Searching for a satisfying job presents serious but surmountable obstacles. It is only if you surmount those obstacles can you find a job you can call a job and not just J. O. B.

Plan Everything

The axiom, “If you fail to plan you plan to fail” holds true in getting organized in your job search. No General goes to war with kid gloves! You need to establish your own “Daily Activity Schedule” to enable you start your day knowing what to do. You must adopt a business like approach to finding a job. From your dressing to your comportment you should portray responsibility and be well organized. Having a journal of your places of interest to visit duly itemized is not a bad idea. Having the addresses and phone numbers of prospective employers handy will make your communication easier.

Prepare Yourself

What about your resume? Call it Curriculum Vitae (i.e. CV) if you like. It is a summary bio data of who and what you are. You must lay emphasis on preparing a bankable but adaptable resume to your soon-to-be employer. Have you not heard of the saying, “The way you dress is the way you are addressed?”

You will agree with me that your resume is like a Business Proposal you would take to your banker as an entrepreneur. You get to dot your i’s and cross your t’s. You must convince your banker that every dollar received will be judiciously utilized and that you are going to over-deliver. Anything short of that will be turned down. Believe me! So also is your ability to secure a lucrative job of your dream. Period!

Your resume will speak volumes of you. If you are not sure how best to prepare your resume, consult a professional. Or better yet check some sample resume templates here

How to Get the Career You Want

You may also lay your hands on sample resumes online related to your field and adapt a good one. Endeavor to list your education, training and previous experiences in your resume. I may emphasize here that you detail all your previous experiences because employers seem to be more interested in what you are bringing along to your present job more than anything else. And in case you have cross-training experiences in your previous jobs, all well and good. State it.

But if you are a green horn who has just passed out of school don’t despair. At best include your outstanding activities in school plus hobby and or extra curricular. They are part of your exposure and experience so far.

Position Yourself

Be everywhere. In one of my speaking engagements to a local church sometime ago, I told them point blank that, “the more the planting the greater the harvest.” Why? You can never tell which seed will sprout and grow to harvest. Also in planting there is likelihood that some seeds will fall on fertile soil while some on rocky soil.

A good and anticipative fisherman that decides to cast the widest net is most likely person to catch more fish. The bottom line is spread your tentacles in your job hunt far and wide to improve your chances of landing a dream job.

From my experience, advertised jobs have already been filled up or there is always keen competition in securing such jobs. The best and easily accessible jobs are unadvertised jobs. You can reach out for these jobs only if you comb the hidden job market.

Make the Most of Your Employed Days

As it were, majority of job seekers are depressed when they are not employed or not gainfully employed. That is a foolish thing to do. The natural and productive thing to do is to assume that you are a student in training. It doesn’t matter whether you are an artisan. Read, study and learn yourself into a new job. Learning is a lifetime activity. The funniest part is that no matter the rung of the learning ladder we are in life, there are always new things to learn. Why not bulletproof yourself with new ideas, new findings, and better ways of excelling in your expected job? Or even improve on your deficiencies.

If possible take courses or attend seminars with minimal fees. Lots of them out there are organized by not-for-profit organizations. Remember you can network from there too. Tell friends, family members and clubs you belong to that you are scouting for a job. In essence you are spreading your chances of finding a gainful job. Ask and you shall receive. Or ask as many times as possible and you will receive as many times as are available. I hope the “The 3Ps of How to Get a Job” will serve as verve in landing you that job.
